Sport Enrichment

The Sports Specialism offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities through an extra-curricular programme of clubs and practices:

This terms programme can be seen here.

Many of the activities included above, together with a number of other sports lead to selection for college sporting teams, with numerous individuals progressing to District, County, Regional and National selection

Additionally the individuals who are identified as Gifted & Talented in Sport are interviewed at least twice each academic year by Mrs Davies [Teacher in charge of Sports G&T] and from these discussions extra-support and targets are set. For example additional help with the timings of course work should it coincide with sports related activities at a County/Regional or National Level. Similarly their expertise can also be utilised within coaching and helping younger members of the college community. There is a planned trip to Bath University for the identified members of the G&T in Sport learners as both a reward for their continued excellence but also as an insight into future possibilities in sport.

The Sports Specialism has consistently run a number of Sky Sports Living for Sport projects for identified learners. Through this link a group of 15 learners benefitted from a trip to the Sky Sports Studios. A second group of 28 examination sport students enjoyed a tour of Reading Football Clubs ground [The Madjeski Stadium] followed by a tour of the Sky Studios which included preparing and presenting a Special Sports Report which was recorded upon the fantastic Sky Sports Equipment. A third trip to the same venue is booked for February; this is aimed at a further group of 38 Examination Sport Learners.

The Sky Sports Living for Sport programme has also benefited from the provision of Sports Mentors; subsequently EMC learners have received coaching and advice from National Sporting Greats such as Thinus Delport [South African International Rugby Player]; Mel Clarke [World Champion and Paralympic Silver Medal winner from London 2012]; Tom Davies [GB International Judo Player]; Craig Figes [GB Water Polo captain from London 2012]

The tremendous support of The Kingspan Community Trust has assisted in enabling a wide range of Leadership Qualifications to be completed by learners at the college. These Leadership Awards have been obtained in –

  • Quick Sticks Hockey
  • Young Netball Organisers Award
  • Netball Young Officials Award
  • Young Rugby Leaders Award
  • Young Cricket Leaders Award

Many Key Stage 4 learners, together with a smaller but equally talented group of Key Stage 3 learners qualify through sporting excellence for Sporting Half-Colours ties and Sporting Full-Colours ties. The award of these ties represents continued and consistent excellence in their chosen sporting areas.

The annual EMC Sports Awards Evening is a popular and prestigious event upon the college calendar. The event has been running for 10 years with celebrity speakers presenting awards to a wide range of talented sports performers from within the college. Guest speakers include the previously mentioned Mel Clarke and Craig Figes in addition to International Paralympic competitors and multi-medal winners Clare Cashmore; Sasha Kindred and Nyree Lewis and also Olympic middle-distance runner Christina Boxer:

2014-15 reflected the excellence achieved by many of our learners in a wide range of sporting areas; through participation at college and through involvement at community clubs the following standard of performance typifies the sporting ability at EMC.
