Science Enrichment

At EMC Science provision is tailored to a student’s abilities and interest with seven different courses currently on offer at Key Stage 4 (Science, Additional Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Entry Level Science, BTEC Applied Science) and three separate A-levels (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).  Enrichment opportunities are available to all students at every stage of their journey through the Sciences.

At Key Stage 3 we run a STEM club for all students interested in extending their understanding in a fun and practical way.  We also have a gardening club for those with green fingers and have close links with Leominster in Bloom with whom we have planted an orchard on college grounds comprising rare varieties of Herefordshire fruits.  We aim to run enrichment trips and visits for every year group and have run trips to the following places in recent years:

  • Spaceguard Centre, Knighton
  • @Bristol
  • Warren Farm, Bromyard
  • Science of Rollercoasters, Alton Towers

At Key Stage 4 we run a Science Club for students who wish to develop particular interests.  We have a wide range of speakers and guests who come in to run specialised sessions ranging from the Science of Cookery to Astrophysics.  We also run a residential Biology Field Trip at Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.  We support individual students with specialist interests by sending them on University level access courses including a Chemistry Camp GCSE residential at Bath University, an Engineering Residential at Manchester University and a Royal Veterinary College travelling Open Day.

At Sixth form we also run Biology Field Trips to enable students to study coastal ecosystems.  We have also sent groups to Reading University to Forensic Science events.  Physicists have taken advantage of events run by the Institute of Physics.
