MFL at Key Stage 4

The Faculty offers opportunities for the students to study French and / or German during KS4. This course leads to an academic GCSE qualification from the AQA exam board which is looked upon very favourably by both Universities and future employers. We are extremely proud of our excellent results, and we will guarantee a qualification for well-focused and hard-working MFL students.

The Faculty not only teaches French & German but also facilitate Spanish & Polish GCSEs.

During KS4 all students study a series of topics in French and German through the 4 skill areas ( Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing ) and in a variety of tenses. The topics broadly represent following 4 areas:

 1. PERSONAL AND SOCIAL LIFE

Students have regular opportunities to explore topics which deal with the aspects of their personal lives and relationships with families and friends. These include self, family and friends; home life; shopping, meals and healthy living; fashion; illness and accidents; free time and future plans.

 2. THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Students have regular opportunities to explore topics which deal with aspects of the physical environment including their home town or region and environmental themes. These include home town and region; the local environment; weather and seasons; pollution and recycling and school and education

 3. THE WORLD OF WORK

Students have regular opportunities to explore topics which deal with aspects of the world of work and employment. These include work experience; part-time jobs; future careers and technology ( sending messages, accessing information etc. )

 4. THE WIDER WORLD

Students have regular opportunities to explore topics which deal with aspects of the wider world. These include travel and holidays; the media; social issues ( crime, drugs, healthy living, religion etc. ), and life in countries where French and German are spoken.

All students complete written and oral assessments during the course, and reading and listening papers during the formal examination period in May / June of year 11. The assessment is summarised as follows:

During the course the students will also have the opportunity to:

-Join our KS4 Language Leaders / Student Voice group,

-Visit our partner school in Saverne, France and Nürnberg, Germany.

-Experience aspects of French and German culture during our stay in Saverne, France which includes a hop over into Germany.

-Visit the Birmingham German Christmas Market

-Attend revision sessions run on Tuesday afternoons for French and German to support with their languages.

Where can languages take me?

Many areas of work are more accessible [or more profitable] with a language GCSE; jobs do not only include teaching and translation but also in hospitality and tourism, publishing and media, education, advertising and marketing amongst many more!
